Additional Frequently Asked Questions
- Are there plans to update the E-Payments Routing Directory to include additional information (e.g., full address)?
There are currently no plans to change the format of the E-Payments Routing Directory file or add additional data elements in the future.
- Did broadcast messages for E-Payments Routing Directory and Fedwire Securities Service move to the ISO 20022 standard?
With the ISO 20022 implementatio on July 14, 2025, we retired broadcast messages related to changes to Fedwire Funds Service customers in the E-Payments Routing Directory. Customers with access to a FedLine® solution can routinely download the E-Payments Routing Directory to obtain copies of the most recent directory. This directory is updated whenever changes are made. Please refer to the E-Payments Routing Directory FAQs for additional information.
Broadcast messages related to the Fedwire Securities Service remain in the legacy format.
- Will the Fedwire Funds Service continue to support the market practices for Dodd-Frank remittance transfers and SWIFT® global payments innovation (gpi)?
Both market practices have been discontinued. Please refer to the "Dodd Frank Section 1073 – Cross-Border Remittance Transfers" document on the Payments Market Practice Group's web page (Off-site) for additional information.
- Has the FedTransaction Analyzer® tool been updated to include the Fedwire Funds Service ISO 20022 messages?
Effective July 14, 2025, the FedTransaction Analyzer tool was updated to include Fedwire Funds Service ISO 20022 messages.
- The look and feel of the FedTransaction Analyzer tool remains the same.
- The data included in the FedTransaction Analyzer tool is limited to the fields that the tool provided previously and is not enhanced to include all of the data elements available in ISO 20022 messages. For example, the tool was not updated to include the Ultimate Debtor, Ultimate Creditor and other new parties/agents that can be included in ISO 20022 messages. Due to this limitation, you cannot solely rely on the FedTransaction Analyzer tool to contain full details of your Fedwire Funds Service messages. While the tool may be enhanced in the future to include all ISO 20022 data elements, that date has not yet been determined.
- What is a BIC?
A Bank Identifier Code (BIC) is a unique code that is used to identify financial institutions globally. A BIC makes it easier to identify institutions involved in financial messaging, e.g., in ISO 20022 messages.
While often associated with the Swift® financial messaging network, a financial institution does not have to be a Swift participant to obtain a BIC. You can visit this page to learn more about signing up for a non-connected BIC.
