Five FedNow® Service announcements from this fall

The FedNow Service has made some major announcements in the past few months. From new and upcoming risk management features to participant milestones and federal agency disbursement news, here are some highlights to keep you informed of recent developments on the instant payments service:

Instant federal agency disbursements

The U.S. Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service added the FedNow Service for instant disbursements for federal agencies — including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) — as part of its Digital Payout program (Off-site). The service’s inclusion in the program equips agencies with a modern, efficient way to provide instant payments to individuals and organizations nationwide.

Transaction limit increase

The FedNow Service network transaction limit (Off-site) will increase from $1 million to $10 million in response to growing commercial demand, effective November 2025. The increased limit will enable financial institutions and businesses to support higher-value use cases and reflects an increasing need for speed and certainty in the modern payments ecosystem.

Network intelligence pilot and enhanced reporting

A pilot program is currently underway for an upcoming network intelligence tool (Off-site) that will allow financial institutions sending transactions over the FedNow Service to do a “pre-check” on receiver accounts before making a payment. Additionally, the service added the Federal Reserve’s ScamClassifier model (Off-site) forms to its fraud reporting process, allowing participants to provide additional details on suspicious transactions.

Exception Resolution Service

FedNow participants now can use the Exception Resolution Service to directly communicate with one another to ensure that exceptions — such as disputes, notifications, questions or requests for additional information — can be resolved swiftly and effectively for instant payments.

1,500 participant milestone

The FedNow Service network now has over 1,500 participants, as financial institutions continue to prioritize instant payment capabilities by innovating and adopting new use cases.
